O.T. MP3 revisited

Hi evryone,

I read the ?music section in Steve Jobs book. He was aware of the digital compression problem to music. Distortion ,and overtones were not being recorded.

Today I Tunes are asking the record companies to give them the HD or 24bit 96khz master copies because of their greater dynamic range making a better MP3 sound.

Unfortunatly FM broadcaster are left to rip in either WAV or MP3. For economic and practical reason MP3 is more often the choice.

Perhaps the FCC and CRTC should legislate the use of only WAV format Ripping across the US and Canada.

Re: FM broadcasters, I thought the "De facto" broadcast standard in past years was MP2 @ 192 kbps? (still a lossy codec). With DAB, I believe the trend has been to re-encode their "music universes/libraries" in wav. However, when you take into account the "brick wall" limiting used in a lot of today's (and over recent years) mastering of CD's, coupled with the on-air muti-band processing of the broadcaster (the loudness wars), dynamic range flys out the window imho. My Altecs certainly show up the short comings of FM broadcasting in my neck of the woods.

Agreed. The FM in my area makes it sound like Bose. No highs, no lows. No dynamics so you can nap.

I thought that that was why they invented EQ?

Exactly how is eq gonna put back something that isn't there? You don't seem to understand what an EQ can do. It can't fix overly processed music. It can drop a peak or boost a valley. But if it ain't there it ain't there.

Does anyone have information on the dynamic range that a loudspeaker can achieve in a home listening room before room reflections and absorbtions noticeably degrade the sound?
